Omeara will celebrate five glorious years with a birthday party in November.
The Borough based grassroots venue, which has quickly grown into one of the most important live stages in London, will welcome Australian band Gang of Youths and soul musician Aaron Taylor to its stage in celebration on 17th November. Omeara’s popular weekly LGBTQI club night ‘Feel It’ (presented by Jodie Harsh and Little Gay Brother) will DJ into the early hours of the morning. Radio X’s long-standing arbiter of new music John Kennedy will also be spinning records throughout the night.
In just half a decade, Omeara has welcomed some of the biggest names and fastest rising faces to its stage. With a capacity of 325, the likes of Skepta, Kylie, Biffy Clyro, Beck, and Laura Marling are used to performing in far bigger spaces and to many more fans, but Omeara provided them all with the perfect ‘underplay’ moment. At the other end of the spectrum, Omeara played a key role in the series of memorable stepping stones that sent comparative unknowns at the time such as Maggie Rogers, Sam Fender, Declan McKenna, Jorja Smith, Dermot Kennedy, and Celeste onto the bigger stages and in front of many more fans. Those artists all left an impression on Omeara, and Omeara hopes to have left an impression on each of them too, and to fans of every artist who’s hit the stage.
The venue’s founder Ben Lovett reflects on five years of Omeara,
“When Omeara first opened back in 2016, we were still hurriedly painting the walls and hoovering up the builders’ dust just moments before the doors first opened. That was stressful at the time, but we were adamant that the venue needed to be perfect, from the very first impression of those walking into the room to every single person who’s come to enjoy a drink or watch a show since. Five years on that’s not changed. London deserved world-class facilities for artists playing their first shows, whilst also delivering venues that hold music fans’ best interests at heart. That’s important to us today as it was five years ago.
“We’ve had some incredible shows at Omeara, and shows that people still talk to us about several years on. That’s why we started it. Creating those favourite gig memories that you will remember and want to talk about. We’re very proud to have reached the five year mark, but we’re excited to now be heading towards ten years, fifteen years, and further into the future. Omeara feels like an important venue for London, but we want it to be a venue that gets talked about in the same breath as the true bastions of the London scene for decades to come. We’re just getting started.”
The fifth birthday party promises not just to be a special celebration of a vital space for the music community, but also a preview of the next five, ten, and fifteen years of Omeara.
